While Stefan planned on leaving town to you know, “find himself,” his plans were quickly changed when Damon let him know Cade had Elena’s body. So, he [sadly] interrupted Kai’s epic karaoke session, told him to hand over the dagger and promised that he would kill Cade; Kai responded by letting him know that when Cade goes, so does Hell. Regardless, Damon snapped Kai’s neck and locked him up the armory.
He then headed to meet Cade to give him the dagger, in exchange for Elena. However, Stefan took over and went after Cade, nearly killing him with the help of Alaric ringing the bell, which momentarily knocked Cade out; unfortunately Alaric was interrupted and Cade took back control. Damon showed up right before Cade nearly killed Stefan, but as he let Stefan go, he also lit Elena’s coffin on fire.
With that, Cade demanded he take a soul — either Stefan or Elena’s. Damon was forced to choose, with Stefan begging him to choose him and save Elena. But he couldn’t do it; ultimately he chose himself, giving his soul up to the devil for eternity. He then stabbed himself with a piece of Elena’s wooden coffin, killing himself (again).
The only person who could save Damon was Bonnie, since she had some sort of psychic gift that Cade had. She of course showed up for her bestie and Cade warned her that stopping Damon would be too much for her, but she wouldn’t stop. Damon also tried to convince “Bon” to save herself, but she was the ultimate BFF. Regardless, they didn’t need her to sacrifice herself — Stefan showed up at the last minute and killed Cade with the dagger.

So where was Caroline during all of this? Well, she was a little bit busy with her own magic-using little twins. They literally were starting fires at preschool, so Kai offered to help — because he was a siphon just like they were, and knew how horrible it was. He told her that the armory was the worst place for them to be because there was magic literally in the walls. But obviously he wasn’t trying to help; he broke out of the cell and tried to find them and kill them. However, Alaric got to him first and beat the hell out of him, and just when Kai took over the strength, Caroline showed up to save Alaric, and knocked him out “for Jo.” Aww!
Alaric had a way to keep the twins safe though, and you know, avoid them lighting fires at school. He wanted to create a school at the armory for them and kids like them (are there others like them just running around town that they are unaware of?). He also wanted Caroline’s help in it, and she couldn’t have been happier — until Stefan showed up. After a pep talk from his brother, Stefan re-proposed to Caroline and gave one hell of a speech. With that, she obviously said yes!
Who’s Worst Than The Devil?
Naturally, Damon was celebrating, and even gave us a glimpse of Elena nice and safe in her coffin — well, for a moment anyway. Bonnie was in charge of taking care of Kai, and since Hell was gone, she created his personal Hell, a prison world that was created by Gemini magic thanks to Josie and Lizzie. Except Hell did still exist. He actually lied to the group and apparently had “lost a bet.” With Cade dead, Hell was now stronger — and would be run by “the myth, the legend, the baddest bitch of all…” Katherine.
